Oscar winner Mark Ronson Identifies as a ‘Sapiosexual’! What really is Sapiosexuality and the debate over it?

The Oscar winner Songwriter Mark Ronson recently Thursday identified himself as a ‘Sapiosexual’ in a segment on Good Morning Britain. This means that for Ronson, intelligence is the main and first attractive trait to find someone sexually attractive.

For the 44-year-old musician, this new term was introduced in the prior segment of the show where they were debating over ‘Sapiosexuality’.

The debate was between Author/Journalist Nichi Hudgson who herself identifies as a sapiosexual and Sociologist Dr. Catherine Hakim who was against the idea of sapiosexuality as he debates that the law of attraction requires physical attractiveness trait first then other traits like intelligence.

As the debate heated, back backstage Ronson had found a new identification for him i.e. sapiosexuality. Therefore, later came out on the show as one.

What is Sapiosexuality?

As Ronson comes out as a sapiosexual, people who aren’t aware of the term must be curious about it. The first take is that it is an identification of people who believe that their law of attractiveness is a bit different than others.

Sapiosexuality means that one is attracted to someone’s intelligence regardless of their physical appeal, gender, and other orthodox ideas of attractiveness.

In regards to the Mariam-webster dictionary, sapiosexuality means,

sexually attracted to highly intelligent people,’  and that it,

‘removes gender identity as well as looks from the equation of romantic attraction’.

The word was first coined by LiveJournal writer Wolfieboy in 1998 and has been gradually earning the attention of people.

Sapiosexuality counter-arguments?

Before Ronson’s interview, the show held a debate on sapiosexuality and its legitimacy. Nichi Hodgson who spoke on behalf of sapiosexuality says that for her intelligence comes first. In her own words,

“The definition of sapiosexuality doesn’t mean not physical attraction – it means intelligence first. So that’s how I identify,”

However, Sociologist Dr. Catherine Hakim counter-attacked her by saying,

“When you meet someone new for the first time, within 30 seconds you register their age, their sex, their ethnicity and how attractive they are. It’s not that intelligence doesn’t matter, but we all react instantly to men and women, young and old, by how attractive they are, and that registers itself permanently.”

Dr, Catherine might not be the only one to disagree with the term as Daily Beast writer Samatha Allen writes,

“We don’t need a special word — especially one modeled after minority identity labels like ‘homosexual’ and ‘bisexual’ — to describe a completely normative facet of human attraction. In the modern world, identifying as sapiosexual has about as much semantic utility as claiming that you are kind-sexual, dependable-sexual, or rich-sexual.”

Regardless of people from two ends of the topic, it seems Ronson has found a new identification for himself.
