Stephen Lang is an American actor and playwright. He is widely known for his memorable role as Colonel Miles Quaritch in the hit film Avatar (2009). He is also famous for playing the character Attorney David Abrams in the TV series Crime Story from 1986 to 1988. Lang currently plays Waldo in the TV series Into the Badlands (2015-present).

Stephen Lang was born on 11 July 1952, in New York City, New York, USA.  He is the youngest child of Theresa Volmer and Eugene Lang. His father was an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

He has two elder siblings named Jane Lang, an attorney and activist, and David Lang, who served as an executive at REFAC. His nationality is American and he is of Ashkenazi Jewish, Irish, and German ethnicity.

Lang attended school in Jamaica Estates, Queens. For high school, he attended George School. After high school, he graduated from Swarthmore College in 1973 with a degree in English Literature. He holds an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Jacksonville University.

He played attorney David Abrams in the television series Crime Story from 1986 to 1988. He played the title role in the NBC movie Babe Ruth (1991). In 1992, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his lead role in The Speed of Darkness. His film role in the Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989) earned him widespread critical acclaim. Since then, he has appeared in numerous movies and TV films.

In 2003, Stephen Lang played the role of Gen. Thomas in Gods and Generals, for which he won the MovieGuide Awards–Grace Award for Acting. His role as Col. Miles Quaritch in the 2009 hit movie Avatar earned him several award nominations.

Stephen Lang won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie. For the same movie, he was nominated for the Teen Choice Award Choice Movie Villain, Teen Choice Award Choice Movie Fight, MTV Movie Award for Best Villain, Scream Award for Best Villain, and several other awards.
