Who is Anoushka Shankar?

Anoushka Shankar is a British Indian sitar player and composer. Likewise, she is also known for her activism. In fact, she authored the book ‘Bapi: The Love of My Life’ which was a biographical portrait of her father Ravi Shankar. Whereas, she is also a columnist for the ‘First City’ magazine and the ‘Hindustan Times.’

Anoushka was born in  London, England, the United Kingdom on June 9, 1981, to parents Ravi Shankar and Sukanya Shankar. She has a sibling namely  Norah Jones (half-sister). She belongs to British Indian nationality and English ethnicity.

Talking about her profession, her first public performance on 27th February 1995, which was her father’s 75th birthday. Beyond that, she was accompanied by the renowned tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. On the same year, she also started accompanying her father in his concerts around the world.

During 1998, she also released her first album ‘Anoushka’, which was followed by her second album ‘Anourag’, (2000). Likewise, her third album ‘Live at Carnegie Hall’, (2001). Whereas, she made the decision to establish herself as a solo performer outside of her father’s ensemble. During 2002, she also performed at the ‘Concert for George’, which was a posthumous tribute to the famed singer and musician George Harrison.

During 2007, she also collaborated with the Indian American musician Karsh Kale and released the album ‘Breathing Under Water. It mostly received positive reviews from critics.  Then in 2011, she also signed with the record label Deutsche Grammophon, which turned out to be a turning point in her career. Hence, her seventh album ‘Traces of You’ (2013).

Additionally, she has also made several guest appearances in recordings of other popular artists, such as American singer and songwriter Lenny Kravitz, an English musician and songwriter Gordon Matthew Thomas Summer, popularly known as Sting.
