In 1996, James Comey served as Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney in charge of the Richmond Division of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. He served there until 2001.

He also served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University Of Richmond School Of Law. James became the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York in January 2002. He became the Deputy Attorney General on December 11, 2003.

In June 2013, President Barack Obama officially announced that he would nominate Comey to be the next Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, replacing outgoing director Robert Mueller.
