Jen Atkin: Professional Life and Career

Jen moved to Los Angeles to pursue a hairstyling career following her high school graduation in 2000. After about six to eight months, she heard about Estilo salon looking for a receptionist, she got the job. There she met Jessica Alba, who got her hair colored there back when she was doing Dark Angel.

A year and a half later, Estilo promoted her to the position of manager. It took her two to three years working as a manager to save up enough to go to beauty school at Abram Friedman Occupational Center. While in school, she started working as an assistant to the stylists to get hours toward her cosmetology license. She also worked in the salon, was a hostess at night, and went to school the rest of the time. Atkin got her degree and license in about a year and a half.

About this time, Chris McMillan opened up his own salon in Beverly Hills, and Atkin went to work with him as an assistant. One of the stylists, Andy Lecompte, was this star on the rise. He also taught her about being a good person, working hard, and not being dramatic. Andy had just started doing Madonna’s hair and asked her to assist him. Then he asked Atkin to go on Madonna’s “Confessions” tour with him in 2006.

When they got back, Chris gave Atkin a chair at his salon, and she started building her own clients. Later, when Andy opened his own salon in 2008, she went with him and still works there to this day.

Atkin’s first celebrity client was Minka Kelly, who she had met through some friends. Then, she started working on Amanda Bynes, Lindsay Lohan, and Nicole Richie. Atkin spent 2 to 3 years working full-time in the salon and building celebrity clients during my off-hours. She’d work eight hours, then do someone for a red carpet from 1600-1900 hrs, & almost always worked on her days off.

Atkin had already established herself in the salon world. She also wanted to work the shows at New York Fashion Week. Lorraine Schwartz introduced her to John Galliano, who at the time was the head of Dior. For 2 years, starting in 2008, Atkin worked with Galliano & did hair for his shows in New York, Paris, & China. Since then, she has been working stints in New York whenever she can.

Atkin has been working at the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City for the past two years, and Belle Femme in Dubai for about three years now. She still works out of Andy’s salon in L.A.

She first met Kim Kardashian around five years ago through a bunch of different friends. Kim had seen some of the work Atkin did with Sophia Vergara and asked her to do her hair for a cover of Cosmo in Miami. On the set, she met Khloé too.

In 2013, Atkin had an idea to start a website that’s just about hair. She wanted to do inspiration photos & have video tutorials of girls doing their own hair, real advice women could use at home, & a directory of stylists to give them a place to shine. Mane Addicts went online in 2014.

Her customer includes some Hollywood stars like Sofia Vergara, Christina Hendricks, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Minka Kelly, and Chrissy Teigen—to name a few.
