Katy Perry and Lionel Richie agreed to perform at King Charles III’s coronation
Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will be performing at King Charles III‘s coronation concert. Joining them will be Andrea Bocelli who agreed to play at the new monarch’s upcoming coronation concert despite a string of A-listers refusing to do so.
The BBC announced on Friday that the event will take place on Sunday, May 7, just a day after Charles, 74, and his wife Camilla, 76, are crowned the UK’s new King and Queen.
Charles became the monarch after his mother Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September 2022.
Apart from Perry, 38, Richie, 73, and Bocelli, 64, the British pop group Take That, Sir Bryn Terfel, Freya Ridings, and Alexis Ffrench will be giving their performances at the historic event.
The BBC said of the coronation celebration in a statement,
“The concert will celebrate a new chapter in the nation’s history, with themes of love, respect and optimism, celebrating the four nations, their communities and the Commonwealth,”
Katy and Lionel, both American Idol judges, have known the new monarch for years. They have even served as ambassadors for many of his charities.
The Dark Horse songstress has been an ambassador of the British Asian Trust since 2020. It is a non-profit organization co-founded by Charles to fight poverty in South Asia.
The Roar singer said in a statement at the time,
“I am excited to be performing at the Coronation Concert, and helping to shine a further light on the British Asian Trust’s Children’s Protection Fund, whose work includes on-ground initiatives to fundraising, with the aim to find solutions to child trafficking,”

Prince Harry will attend Charles’s coronation
Richie, on the other hand, was appointed as the first-ever global ambassador and chairman of the Global Ambassador Group for the Prince’s Trust in 2019. Charles established the organization nearly 46 years ago with an aim of benefitting disadvantaged youth.
In a statement of his own, Richie said,
“To share the stage with the other performers at The Coronation Concert is a once-in-a-lifetime event and it will be an honor and a celebration,”
While fans are excited to see Richie, Perry, and Bocelli on stage, many stars like Adele, Elton John, Robbie Williams, and the Spice Girls turned down the invitations to perform at the show for the new monarch.
Many guessed that the singers are afraid of being associated with the scandalous monarchy.
Simon Jones who is a publicist for Little Mix, Louis Tomlinson, and Nial Horan said,
“The royal family has faced a number of PR disasters in recent times, and anyone performing at the show would have to consider whether there would be a backlash from appearing amongst their fans,”
Despite many top artists refusing to perform at the King’s big day, many notable names, including the King’s youngest son, Prince Harry will attend the event.
Buckingham Palace confirmed earlier this week,
“Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that the Duke of Sussex will attend the coronation service at Westminster Abbey on May 6,”
