Sam first came out as gay to the public in May 2014 revealing they have been dating actor and model Jonathan Zeizel. However, their relationship didn’t long last as they split after two months of dating.

While speaking to The Times, the singer opened up about his struggle to come out publicly with his sexuality because they were the only gay person from his hometown.

They said,

“Looking back on it, it was the fear f saying the wrong thing and offending, And I was 19 when I started writing the first album. I’d just moved to London from a village — I was literally the only gay in the village. I didn’t know what I wanted to say.”

Smith explicitly identified as nonbinary in September 2019 and changed their gender pronouns to they/them, stating,

“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out…”

During their appearances on actor Jameela Jamil‘s new Instagram show, “I Weigh Interviews”, they revealed,

“I’m not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between,”

Smith went on to acknowledge that they saw the words “nonbinary” and “genderqueer” and heard people speak about these identities, and said,

“I was like, ‘F_, that is me’.”

A few months later, they also changed their pronoun to ‘they’ and ‘them’,

“I’ve always been very free in term of thinking about my sexuality, so I’ve just tried to change that into my thoughts on gender as well,”

Sam is presently rumored to be dating Christian Cowan. In January 2023, the two sparked dating rumors after being spotted cozying up together in NYC.

The pair were photographed holding hands while on their brief stroll while Smith gave Cowan a tender kiss on Cowan’s head. However, the rumored couple has yet to comment on their romance rumors.

Prior to the stroll, Cowan accompanied Smith to the White House in December 2022 where they posed for a photo with President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
