In 2002, his career took a huge turn as he entered to be a mayor. He became the 60th mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana. When he was a mayor, Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf of Mexico in 2005.

He said in the meeting, “I can see in your eyes, that you want to know, ‘How do I take advantage of this incredible opportunity? How do I make sure New Orleans is not overrun with Mexican workers”.
