Lee Jung-jae becomes the first South Korean actor to receive an Emmy

The main protagonist of Netflix’s survival drama Squid Game, Seong Gi-hun bagged the best actor for the male lead in the drama series. It’s the first trophy for a first Asian/ South Korean star to snatch the most prestigious award in acting in this category.

He stood out among the other 2022 nominees, Ozark‘s Jason Bateman, Succession’s Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk, and Severance‘s Adam Scott. While the Emmy is premiering at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 12, 2022.

Lee Jung-jae in his thank you speech after holding awards from the award presenter Angela Bassett and Ariana DeBose donned in purple and yellow gowns told,

“Thank you so much, first of all I’d like to thank God above. Thank you to the television academy, thank you to Netflix, thank you to director Hwang [Dong-hyuk] for realistic problem we all face come to life to creatively on the screen with a great script and amazing visuals. Thank you Squid Game team!”

Primetime Emmy nominations for the Squid Game! Is it returning for season 2?

Squid Game is the first foreign language series, Korean to be nominated for outstanding drama series. A total of 14 nominations are given to this series while its biggest competitors for the year are Severance, Barry, and Dopesick.

The show is returning for the second season s announced on June 2022 while the record-setting Squid Game cast Lee Jung-jae is excited about the upcoming storyline. He was vocal about his expectation for the second series when he confessed,

“I hope there’s some sort of twist that’ll be exciting and surprising for me and the viewers. If it was predictable, it would be no fun.”
